migraine headache relief
When you’re suffering with a bad headache, the last cause of you’d think of is your jaw. The TMJ, or temporomandibular joint, could be the source of the nagging headache that just won’t seem to go away.
The TMJ is like a hinge that connects your jaw bone to your skull. This important joint lets you do things like talk, laugh, and chew, and let’s your jaw to move up and down and side to side.
With the complexity of the hinge and sliding motions, this joint isn’t like most other joints in the body. If something is off or not aligned properly, this joint can be the cause of headache pain. These are typically called temporomandibular disorders (TMD).
What causes a TMJ headache?
It’s hard to know the exact cause of a TMD, it could be something as simple as constantly grinding your teeth; often without knowing it during sleep times. TMJ pain has been reported in 1 in 10 people, and TMD has been reported in almost half of the population of the United States.
There are no specific statistics about TMJ headaches because it can be hard to distinguish between general headaches and TMJ headaches.
The muscles that work the hinge joint run along your jaw and cheeks, and sometimes these muscles can cause pain — even headaches. When the muscles in your jaw tense up — like when you grind your teeth — the pain can spread to other TMJ muscles alongside your cheeks and on the sides and top of your head, causing a headache.
